The tasks assigned during my work placement for the first two weeks not only aligned with the objectives of my curriculum in arts education and community engagement, but also solidified my involvement in the project. Reviewing and researching projects such as the Royal York Bridge Mural Project and the EDGE Youth Art Show provided me with insights into real-world initiatives, and deepened my understanding of the intersection between art and community. Analyzing past EDGE shows and communications for project development helped me grasp the diverse content and themes prevalent in community-based art initiatives. Additionally, creating graphics for community consultation and artist open calls for the Royal York Bridge Mural Project honed my visual communication skills, a crucial aspect of arts education.

Through my work placement, I gained insights and skills that extend beyond the classroom learning. My involvement in the development stages of the mural project offered a firsthand understanding of the collaborative process. Working alongside professionals like John underscored the value of teamwork and shared vision in achieving common goals. Furthermore, I learned the significance of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in community engagement projects through community consultation. Murals have the power to amplify underrepresented voices and marginalized communities. By incorporating diverse perspectives into mural projects, art coordinators and artists can ensure that all members of the community feel seen and heard, promoting inclusivity and social cohesion, and resonating with the community it serves.

The experience taught me the importance of adaptability and flexibility in the face of unforeseen challenges, for example the lack of participants joining the program, shifting timelines, or having resource constraints. In addition, I have had the opportunity to apply principles of managing an art project in a LASO organization. By remaining open-minded and receptive to new ideas, methodologies, and technologies, I can extend my working capacity beyond merely reacting to challenges in project management, but embracing change and innovation to drive positive outcomes for their projects.

In conclusion, my work placement experience has been exciting. The tasks assigned not only complimented my curriculum but also provided me with invaluable real-world insights and skills.ย
