I use paintings and creative writings as means of storytelling to offer a way connection through all aspects of history to what essence we have for our future.

Much of Vietnamese poetry has been dedicated to the beauty of women. One could see her age and social status through the lotus and her bodice color, as only the elite might opt for more festive, brighter tones such as red and pink or white.

This painting responds with different awareness and actions of the artist: a Tonkin woman was breaking the conventional education of the four virtues by enjoying a pipe cigarette instead of working during day-time.
BLACK TEETH RED LIPS
Oil in canvas
This painting is about Vietnamese dyeing teeth black back in the 1910s, when the custom was once the hallmark of the nation’s youthful beauty. Having black teeth was not only a rite of passage for young coming-of-age women, it was believed to protect the owner from evil spirits.

Hau Dong is a practice of Vietnamese shamanism, which was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible World Heritage. It is part of the worship of Vietnamese mother goddesses. The painting is about a shaman performing Hau Dong rituals which is to bring harmony to the individual, their family, and their community within their environment.
